Scrutiny of Russian-origin timber entering Australia through third countries is continuing to build, with the Australian Forest Products Association now working with the Anti-Dumping Commission on a potential application concerning laminated veneer lumber (LVL) manufactured in China.

The development follows growing industry concern about whether the origin and species of imported timber can be reliably established through existing documentation. Previous independent testing by Source Certain for the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry found that half of the imported timber products sampled did not match the origin, species or genus declared in their documentation.

In its latest reporting on the issue, Wood Central looks at the proposed anti-dumping action and the trade routes allowing Russian timber to enter Australia after further processing. Source Certain’s findings feature alongside comments from AFPA Acting CEO Richard Hyett, who points to testing that has identified larch in LVL available in the Australian market.

The latest developments add to growing scrutiny of high-risk timber imports and the evidence available to establish where timber entering Australian supply chains really comes from.
