Our People

The Source Certain scientific team comprises forensic scientists, analytical chemists and geochemistry specialists.

Our scientists are all regarded as leaders in their field. All are highly experienced having worked in a complex scientific investigation area for over 10 years. They are actively involved in cutting-edge scientific research and education and collectively hold over 300 peer-reviewed publications. Our experts have published extensively in the disciplines of forensic science, analytical chemistry, geochemistry, forensic chemistry, food science and forensic entomology.

The technical team pioneered and commercialised provenance science and over the past 40 years have published scientific articles about the application of this science to food and non-food products. This includes; meat, dairy, fruit and vegetables, Australian native fruits, art media and artwork, diamonds, precious metals including gold, cannabis, tea, coffee, chocolate, ceramics, glass and textiles.

    Mr Robert McKenzie has extensive experience as a corporate and dispute resolutions lawyer and is currently a partner of McKenzie Moncrieff Lawyers and counsel at Blackwall Legal LLP.

    He was a partner of a major national law firm, Clayton Utz, and its predecessor firms for 22 years, culminating in being national head of reconstruction. He was also a partner and board member of Jackson McDonald, Western Australia’s largest independent law firm.

    He is currently a director of Keystart Loans Ltd, owned by the WA Housing Authority, where he chairs the risk committee. In addition to this, he is a director of the Australian Institute of Neuro-Rehabilitation and is the chairman of the Perron Institute for Neurological and Translational Science.

    Robert is also a member of the Federal Government Takeovers Panel which adjudicates disputes in company takeover matters and is on the panel of mediators for Immediation, an online dispute legal technology platform that aims to enable more convenient access to dispute resolution.

    In addition to this, he has acted or acts for a range of major accounting firms, financiers, developers, listed, public and major private companies and government agencies in a wide range of industries on complex matters.

    Robert has also lectured part time at the University of Western Australia in a number of corporate law areas and has prepared and delivered numerous papers to an array of industry representative bodies.

    Cameron Scadding is a Forensic and Analytical Chemist, a globally recognised and respected expert in his discipline with extensive complex forensic investigation experience. Cameron has specific experience and expertise in supply chain integrity, security and managing supply chain risks.

    Cameron’s supply chain and forensic skill set have made him a leading consultant across many sectors including agriculture, seafood, cannabis, critical and strategic minerals, gold and diamonds. He is invited to speak regularly on global trends in supply chain integrity, specifically around agri-food, the integrity of food, food fraud, transparency, trust, traceability and provenance. 

    Cameron is a vocal advocate of connecting customers to the sources of food and products by developing tools, systems and platforms that mediate transparency within the supply chain. 

    In addition to his role as Managing Director of Source Certain, Cameron was a founder of Source Certain and a founder and the CEO of TSW Global and TSW Analytical.

    Anthony Shields is the Managing Director of Asymmetric Investment Management Pty Ltd, a Perth-based investment manager specialising in private debt. Prior to this, Anthony established and managed an investment portfolio for a large family office in Perth, Western Australia. He was responsible for asset allocation and portfolio management, risk management, investment and macro-economic analysis.

    He currently sits on the board of another Perth-based family office, advising on investment strategy and portfolio management and is also a non-executive director of Carnegie Clean Energy Limited (ASX:CCE). Prior to his family office investment roles, Anthony worked for Deutsche Bank in equity and derivatives sales and trading and for Macquarie Bank as an equity analyst and institutional equity sales and trading.

    Katherine is Source Certain’s Chief Commercial Officer and is responsible for driving significant growth through domestic and global markets, key partner client engagement, executing strategic sales plans, commercialisation of new technologies and services and increasing market share for our service pillars.

    Katherine is a highly effective and motivated executive with 12 years of senior operational leadership experience within the biotechnology industry. Her major capabilities span key stakeholder engagement, operational leadership, strategic planning, national/international technical business development, project management/execution, budget planning and global distribution negotiation.

    Originally from New Zealand and residing in Melbourne, Katherine is a dedicated supporter of the All Blacks and is now a loyal AFL supporter as a member of the Western Bulldogs.

    Nick Fiori is a Chartered Accountant with experience in restructuring and corporate finance transactions.

    His previous transaction experience included developing financial forecasting models for debt facility applications and assisting companies with valuations, merger & acquisition transactions and capital raisings.

    Nick joined the Company in February 2021 and is responsible for providing insights into the financial and operational performance of the business.

    Rachel is Source Certain’s Chief Operating Officer and ensures the right solutions are designed for our clients so they can solve the problems which are preventing them from moving forward in their business.

    Rachel’s areas of expertise are forensic investigation, analysis of trace evidence and multivariate statistical interpretation. She has over 16 years experience as an analytical and forensic chemist and helped found the company in 2016. She was previously a Director and co-founder of TSW Analytical.

    Rachel is a member of the Australian and New Zealand Forensic Science Society and served on its committee between
    2006 to 2020, and served as Vice President from 2011 to 2012.

    Rachel is a mother to three very active young boys and spends a lot of time assisting in local community matters and committees. She is a self declared North Melbourne Kangaroos ‘tragic’ and supports Manchester United.

    Rose is the General Manager of Corporate Communications at Source Certain. As part of the Executive Team Rose works to amplify the profile of the company and the brand’s global awareness.

    Drawn into the creative industry at a young age, Rose started her career working in design and branding before moving into in-house positions that expanded into marketing and communications disciplines. 

    Over the last 10 years she has cultivated brands and marketing strategy within the private and public sectors of healthcare, not for profit, fitness, corporate service, education and food industries. 

    Rose is a mum of one adventurous toddler and will escape into her garden or the world of Classic English Literature when given the chance.

  • Dr R John Watling Chief Scientist
    Dr R John Watling Chief Scientist PhD, DIC, FRACI, FRSC, C.Sci, Chartered Chemist, Chartered Scientist, Registered Analyst.

    John has been an applied Analytical Chemist since 1974, holding degrees in Mining Geology and Geochemistry and PhD from Imperial College London. 

    He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry and Royal Australian Chemical Institute, a Chartered Chemist and Registered Analytical Chemist, with over fifty years of experience in instrument design, applied analytical chemistry research, mineral exploration research, government service, and consultancy. 

    John consults law enforcement globally regarding provenance determination of evidential material, method development, and micro-chemical analysis. 

    He is an expert witness both in Australia and overseas and has extensively published his work. John co-founded TSW Analytical in 2006 and is the pioneer of the scientific provenance determination concept that was later developed into TSW Trace®. 

    John has held senior technical leadership and academic positions in multiple countries over his career.

    John enjoys architectural drawing, watercolour painting, writing poetry and is a keen photographer of indigenous flora. 

    He has a passion for the post-Celtic history of Britain and Ireland and collects books, mainly on the history of the United States, Britain and Ireland and the history of chemistry.

  • Ashley Mulder Head of Technical Operations
    Ashley Mulder Head of Technical Operations

    Ashley is Source Certain’s Head of Technical Operations and oversees the instrumentation application of TSW Trace and other analytical methods within our laboratory.

    Ashley has a PhD in Chemistry, after having completed an undergraduate degree in Forensic and Analytical Chemistry. Having spent 4+ years working in large commercial geochemical laboratories, he has gained a large amount of experience in minerals and ICP analysis. He enjoys solving technical problems and finding solutions to tricky analytical requests.

    Outside of Source Certain, Ashley spends his time with family and friends, playing social soccer and enjoys watching just about any sport.

    Dr Ian Dadour is the Head of Research and Education at Source Certain. Since gaining his PhD at the University of Western Australia he has researched in a number of disciplines including insect behaviour and evolutionary biology, insect ecology, insect genetics, applied entomology and forensic entomology.

    In 1989 he was employed by the Western Australian Department of Agriculture as the Officer-in-Charge of the Dung Beetle/ Bush FlyProgramme. This was also the beginning of his forensic entomology career.

    In 2008 at the University of Western Australia Ian was promoted to Professor, a culmination of establishing the Centre for Forensic Science in 2000 and substantive and outstanding contributions nationally and internationally. During this period Ian sustained a high level of research and scholarship and established himself as a leading scholar in the field of forensic entomology. 

    Following research conducted at the University of Tennessee’s (UT) Anthropological Facility in Knoxville, Ian became part of the teaching faculty with the FBI, and each year from 2003 until 2014 he was an instructor for the FBI Evidence Response Team in the Human Remains Recovery School. Ian is also affiliated with the new Anthropological Facility at Oakridge (TN) operated by the Forensic Academy (UT) and the more recently established Forensic Anthropology Research Facility at Texas State University at San Marcos. From 2015 until 2018 Ian was a Professor with The Boston Medical School at Boston University. Ian is a Visiting Professor at Lincoln University, UK and prior to Brexit he was teaching annually into the Erasmus Mundus (EM) Master of Forensic Science Course. He continues to supervise Master students in UK and USA. 

    As Director of the Centre of Forensic Science at UWA over 450 students gained GraduateCertificates/Diplomas, 67 students were awarded Master degrees and 38 students received either a PhD or combined Master/PhD degrees. Ian continues to be the Western Australian Honorary Forensic Entomologist and has appeared as an expert witness in this discipline in courts in Western Australia, Northern Territory, Queensland and New South Wales. 

    Ian is a life member of the West Australian Rowing Club.

  • Jenna Valentin Head of Operations AU
    Jenna Valentin Head of Operations AU

    Jenna is Source Certain’s Head of Operations and oversees the technical based development and application of TSW Trace in our provenance science programs. 

    Jenna heads up analytical method research, development and validation for a range of analysis techniques including implementation of new technologies and capabilities at the Source Certain lab.

    Jenna’s work heavily involves consultancy and analytical services relating to food, agriculture, health, pharmaceutical, mining and minerals.

  • Shelley Scadding Head of Services
    Shelley Scadding Head of Services

    Shelley is the Head of Services at Source Certain. Shelley arranges consumables and services that may be required to run the Source Certain departments and assists in laboratory activities.

    Shelley has overseen services on large construction sites in previous roles and has worked in procurement for civil companies.

    She has 3 amazing children and a fitness background. Every year Shelley rides 200km in two days to raise money for Cancer Research.

  • Sven Fjastad Head of Instrumentation and Principal Minerals Consultant
    Sven Fjastad Head of Instrumentation and Principal Minerals Consultant

    Sven is the Head of Instrumentation and Principal Minerals Consultant at Source Certain. Sven has extensive experience as an Analytical Contract Chemist and Hydrometallurgist. 

    He is the first point of contact with clients interested in utilising Source Certain’s Minerals and Exploration services. Sven has spent over 20 years developing analytical protocols for challenging samples including, mineral concentrates, whole rock analyses, high purity products. 

    He has developed hydrometallurgical flowsheets for the separation and purification of non-ferrous metals from multi-component mineral concentrates. 

    Outside of work and scientific pursuits, Sven plans to sail single handed to the Faroe Islands to celebrate Up Helly Aa one day.
