Source Certain commenced a pilot supply chain integrity program for WA Farm Direct (WFD), the licenced owner and original developer of boutique apple variety Bravo™ in 2021. The program has just been extended to cover all orchards across Australia.
The Details
The premium nature of this Australian apple exposes it to counterfeit risk in Australian and international markets. As a licenced variety, it is only permitted to be produced on licenced farms which can be exploited by non-licenced growers.
Source Certain’s program is a world-first in the apple market where forensic technology is being used to protect and verify the provenance of the fruit.
Each growing location imposes a unique combination of naturally occurring chemicals, molecules, elements and isotopes into the fruit grown there. These have been analysed at Source Certain’s laboratory and a unique chemical fingerprint for each orchard was created and stored in a Provenance Database.
Source Certain will embed its scientific provenance verification technology within an ongoing market surveillance system that routinely buys Bravo apples in selected markets to verify their integrity, Australian provenance and farm of origin. This component of the integrated program will be able to identify and mitigate counterfeit of the premium Australian apple in high-risk markets as well as ensure the Bravo apple is being produced on licenced farms.
Outcomes
- All 26 participating orchards were sampled, analysed, chemical fingerprints created and stored in a Provenance Database for future in-market verification.
- The successful program has been extended for a second year to cover all Australian growers.
The extended program will see reference samples collected from all 81 licenced orchards nationally.
